About Pune
The city is the cultural capital of the state of Maharashtra, and is one of major tourist destinations in India. Located 120 km from Mumbai, Pune is is situated at the eastern edge of the Western Ghats on the Deccan plateau, at 559m above sea level.
Initially developed as an agricultural settlement, Pune is one of the largest urban areas of India and counts amongst the most developed cities of the country.
Pune and the Indian automotive market
The Pune region has seen exceptional growth in automotive OEM and supplier production facilities in the last few years.
Car makers such as the Fiat/Tata joint venture, Renault/Mahindra, Volkswagen, Mercedes and Hindustan are located in the Pune-Pimpri area, with Skoda and GM close by in Maharashtra.
MAN/Force Motors and Eicher/Volvo are the major truck makers in the region, while supplying the ever-vibrant two-wheeler market are Piaggio, Bajaj and Kinetic.
Tier suppliers such as Cummins, Bosch and Johnson Controls are moving in fast to meet demand from their OEM customers, and there are supplier parks being built at several of the new plants.
